Copy trading, copytrading, mirror trading, social trading, whale copying, smart money: one idea under many names. This page explains it in 60 seconds, then lists every guide in the order that makes sense.

What is copy trading, in 60 seconds?

Copy trading means your account automatically repeats the trades of a trader you choose, at an amount you set. They open, you open. They exit, you exit. Your money stays in your account, and your result is your own.

  • You choose the trader. Ideally from a public record, picked on rules, not on one lucky week.
  • You choose the amount. For example $10 a trade. That amount is the most a single trade can lose with isolated margin.
  • The copy lands seconds later. That small delay, plus fees, is why your result is usually a little worse than the trader's.
  • You pay fees. Per trade, as a share of profits, or as a subscription, depending on the service.
  • You can lose money. Copying moves decisions to someone else. It does not remove risk.

A worked example: you copy a trader with $10 at x5, a $50 position. Bitcoin rises 4% and they close. Your copy makes $2.00 gross, about $1.85 after CopyHype's 0.1% and Hyperliquid's 0.045% per side. If Bitcoin falls 4% instead, you lose about $2.15. Full explainer: what is copy trading?.

Where should I start?

With the definition, the words, and a practice plan. Read these three first.

How do I choose who to copy?

Look for recent activity, positive returns over a week and a month, a style slow enough to copy, and copy results that hold up after delay and fees. These guides show how.
