Smart money copy trading: how to follow the best wallets on Hyperliquid

Every Hyperliquid wallet is public, so you can see what the biggest and best traders do in real time. Following them is easy. Following the right ones, at the right speed, is the hard part.

Short answer

Smart money copy trading means automatically repeating the trades of wallets with a strong, public record. On Hyperliquid every account and trade is public, so a tool can follow any wallet. The hard part is choosing: big accounts are not always good, and market makers and scalpers cannot be copied profitably. Look for recent activity, positive returns over a week and a month, slow enough trades, and simulated copy results that hold up.

"Smart money" is a phrase borrowed from old trading floors, where it meant the big, informed players. In crypto it means something more concrete: wallets you can watch, with records you can check. On Hyperliquid, the largest perps exchange that runs fully onchain, you can see every one of those wallets, their open positions and their past trades. That makes smart money copy trading possible. It also makes it easy to copy the wrong wallet.

This guide is part of our copy trading guide.

What does "smart money" mean in crypto?

Smart money is a wallet whose trades have made money consistently, not just once. Size alone does not make a wallet smart.

People often mix up three groups:

Group What they are Worth copying?
Whales Very large accounts Only if they also win
Smart money Wallets with a strong, repeated record Often, if they are copyable
Insiders Wallets that seem to know news early Rarely visible, often gone fast

A whale with $20 million can be losing money every week. A wallet with $200,000 can have a far better record. For copying, what matters is the return on the account (ROI), how steady it is, and whether you can follow it in time.

Why does Hyperliquid make smart money visible?

Because Hyperliquid runs its order book onchain: every account, position, order and fill is public. Anyone can look up any wallet.

On a big company-run exchange, you only see what a trader chooses to share. On Hyperliquid you see everything: what a wallet holds right now, at what multiplier, and every trade it made. Hyperliquid also publishes a leaderboard with profit, ROI and volume over a day, a week, a month and all time.

That openness is what lets tools follow a wallet trade by trade. It is also why there are so many "whale tracker" accounts on Telegram and X. Watching is free. Acting well on what you see is the skill. More on watching: Hyperliquid whale tracker.

Which smart money wallets can you actually copy?

Wallets that hold trades for minutes to days, trade regularly, and win on their own decisions rather than on speed. Two kinds of very profitable wallets fail this test.

  • Market makers. They post buy and sell orders all day and earn the small gap between them, plus exchange rebates. Their "trades" are thousands of tiny fills. A copy gets the fills without the edge.
  • Scalpers. They open and close in seconds or a few minutes. By the time a copy lands, the move is over. Copies of scalpers usually lose, even when the scalper wins.

Then there are the quiet ones: wallets that made a fortune last month and have not traded since. Copying them means waiting for a trade that may never come.

How does CopyHype pick smart money?

Straight from Hyperliquid's leaderboard: top 8 lists by profit or ROI over 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days, among traders active in the last 24 hours, without market makers or traders too fast to copy. The checks below are yours to run on any name.

Check Why it matters
Traded in the last 24 hours A copy only earns if the whale trades
Profit over 7 days Winning now, not only in the past
Profit over 30 days Not one lucky week
Not a scalper or market maker Their profit cannot be copied in time
What copies of them made Delay and fees included, the copy itself has to hold up

The last check is the one most tools skip. It answers the only question that matters to a copier: "If I had copied this wallet at a small size, after the delay and the fees, would I have made money?" Full method: how whales are picked.

What does a $10 smart money copy look like?

Your copy uses the whale's coin, direction and multiplier, at your amount. Here is one trade, with real fee rates.

A whale goes long on SOL at x8. You copy with $10.

Item Number
Your position $10 x 8 = $80
SOL moves in the whale's favor +2.5%
Gross result +$2.00 (+20%)
CopyHype fee, 0.1% each way on $80 $0.16
Hyperliquid fee, 0.045% each way on $80 about $0.07
Net, before funding about +$1.77 (+17.7%)

Now the bad case. SOL moves 2.5% against the whale and they close:

Item Number
Gross result -$2.00 (-20%)
Fees about $0.23
Net about -$2.23 (-22.3%)

At x8 your copy would be liquidated if SOL dropped about 10% to 11% before the whale closed (the exact point depends on the coin's maintenance margin, see how to calculate liquidation price). On a $10 copy, the most you can lose is the $10.

What mistakes do smart money copiers make?

Chasing a single big win, copying size instead of skill, and copying too late. Five habits cost the most.

  1. Copying yesterday's headline. A wallet that made $3 million on one trade is news. It is not a record.
  2. Following the biggest account. Size is not skill. Check ROI over 7 and 30 days.
  3. Entering after the move. If you see an alert and buy by hand ten minutes later, you are buying the whale's profit.
  4. Copying one wallet with everything. Spread small amounts across two or three.
  5. Ignoring fees on high multipliers. At x40, fees are eight times bigger than at x5 on the same amount.

How do I start copying smart money?

Pick from a filtered list, copy in practice first, then go real with small amounts.

  1. Open @copyhypefamilybot in Telegram. Tap Start, then Open the app.
  2. Browse the whales. The lists show the top traders by profit or ROI over 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days. Tap a trader to see their record and open trades.
  3. Tap Copy and set your amount. From $5 a trade. Their next trades happen for you, same coin, same direction, same multiplier.
  4. Practice first. You get $1,000 of practice money free for 24 hours, plus 24 hours for each friend you invite whose first trade opens.
  5. Switch to Real when ready. Your own non-custodial wallet: only you can withdraw, and CopyHype's trading key cannot.

How often should I review the wallets I copy?

Once a week is enough for most people: check each wallet's 7-day ROI, how your copies did after fees, and whether the style changed. Smart money does not stay smart forever.

A simple weekly routine:

  • 7-day ROI turned negative? Lower your amount or pause the copy. On CopyHype, a whale who falls out of the top 8 leaves the list, but copies you already have keep running until you stop them.
  • Your copies lagging the whale? If the whale is up and your copies are flat, the gap is delay and fees. That wallet may have become too fast to copy.
  • Multiplier creeping up? A whale who moved from x5 to x25 has changed their risk, and yours with it.
  • Long silence? A wallet that stopped trading is not earning you anything.

Write down the reason you started copying each wallet. If that reason is gone, so is the reason to keep copying.

Frequently asked questions

Is copying smart money profitable?

Sometimes. Past results do not predict future ones, and copies arrive later than the original. Choosing copyable wallets and keeping amounts small gives you a fairer chance.

Where can I find smart money wallets on Hyperliquid?

On Hyperliquid's own leaderboard, and in explorers and trackers that read Hyperliquid's public data. CopyHype filters the leaderboard for you.

Why not just copy the number one on the leaderboard?

Because the top of a profit leaderboard is often a market maker, a scalper or a one-trade wonder. See the Hyperliquid leaderboard, explained.

Can a whale see that I copy them?

No. You follow a public wallet. The whale does not know and does not get paid.

Can I copy a wallet that is not on the list?

Yes. In CopyHype you can search a name or paste any Hyperliquid address and copy it, at your own risk.
