Short answer
Copy trading means your account repeats the trades of one person you choose, at your size. Mirror trading originally meant copying an automated strategy rather than a person, though many apps now use it as another word for copy trading. Social trading is the wider idea of seeing, discussing and following other traders, which may or may not include automatic copying. Whale copying and smart money copying are copy trading aimed at large, successful wallets.
Search "copy trading" and you get pages about mirror trading, social trading, signal groups and whale tracking, often mixed together. The confusion is understandable: all of them are about using other people's decisions. But who decides, and who presses the button, changes a lot. This page gives each term a clear meaning, shows where they overlap, and says which one fits which person.

What is copy trading?
Copy trading is when your account automatically repeats the trades of a specific person you chose, at a size you set. The key words are "a person" and "automatically".
You pick a trader. When they open a trade, your account opens the same trade. When they close it, your account closes it. Your money stays in your own account and your result is your own. Full walkthrough: what is copy trading?.
Example: you copy a Hyperliquid trader with $10 a trade. They go long on ETH at x4. Your account goes long on ETH at x4 with $10, a $40 position. They close an hour later, up 3% on ETH. Your copy closes too: about +$1.20 before fees.
What is mirror trading?
Mirror trading started as copying a strategy, usually an automated one, rather than a person. Today many apps use "mirror" simply as another word for copy.
In the 2000s, forex brokers offered "mirror trading" where you picked a strategy built by a developer, such as "buy EUR/USD when this indicator crosses that one", and your account ran it. You were not following a human's moods, you were following a set of rules.
Today the line is blurred. A crypto app that "mirrors" a whale's wallet is doing copy trading under another name. When you read "mirror trading" on a site, check which of the two it means:
- Mirror a strategy: rules decide, you can usually read them in advance.
- Mirror a trader: a person decides, you see their trades after they happen.
What is social trading?
Social trading is the wider idea of seeing what other traders do, discussing it, and following them, with or without automatic copying. Think of it as a social network built around trades.
A social trading app may show a feed of trades, comments, leaderboards, profiles with track records and the option to copy. Some people use it only for ideas and then trade by hand. Others copy automatically. The social part is the feed. The copying part is optional.
On Telegram, social trading often means groups where traders post their entries, and a community reacts. That can be useful for learning. It is also where many scams live, because anyone can post a screenshot.
How do they compare side by side?
The difference is who decides and who places the trade.
| Item | Copy trading | Mirror trading (strategy) | Social trading | Signal groups |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who decides | A person you chose | Rules or an algorithm | You, informed by others | The channel owner |
| Who places the trade | Your account, automatically | Your account, automatically | You, or a copy feature | You, by hand |
| Speed | Seconds after the trader | Instant on the rule | Your own speed | Minutes, often late |
| You can check the record | Yes, if trades are public | Backtests and live results | Profiles and feeds | Rarely, screenshots |
| Main risk | The trader has a bad run | The rule stops working | Herd behavior | Late entries, scams |
What do "whale copying" and "smart money copying" mean?
They are copy trading aimed at large, successful wallets on public blockchains. A whale is a trader with a big account. Smart money is a wallet with a strong record.
On an onchain exchange like Hyperliquid, every account, position and trade is public. That makes it possible to follow a wallet without its owner opting in, the way you would follow a public figure. A copy tool reads the wallet's trades and repeats them for you.
Two cautions apply:
- Big is not the same as good. A huge account can still be losing. Look at return on investment (ROI), not just size.
- Some smart money is not copyable. Market makers and scalpers earn from speed and order flow. A copy that arrives a second later gets none of it.
That is why CopyHype's whale lists leave market makers out: they show the top 8 traders on Hyperliquid's leaderboard by profit or ROI over 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days, among those who traded in the last 24 hours, without market makers or traders too fast to copy. More in smart money copy trading.
Which one fits me?
If you want to follow a specific person automatically, copy trading. If you want fixed rules, a strategy bot. If you want ideas but your own decisions, social trading.
| If you | Pick |
|---|---|
| Want trades to happen for you, from someone with a public record | Copy trading |
| Trust rules more than people | A strategy bot or mirror strategy |
| Like to decide yourself but want ideas | Social trading, without auto copy |
| Want speed and no middleman | Avoid signal groups, use copy trading |
| Want to learn first | Any of them, with practice money |
Many people mix them: they read a social feed, copy two traders automatically, and trade a third idea themselves. CopyHype is built for that mix: copy a Hyperliquid whale in one tap, or trade solo on crypto, stocks, gold and indices.
What should I check before following anyone?
Their record over more than one week, their style, how a copy of them would have done, and who holds your money. The same five checks apply to all four approaches.
- Record length. One great week is noise. Look at 30 days or more.
- Style. How long do they hold trades? Very short holds do not copy well.
- Copy results. If the tool shows what a copy at your size would have made, read it. Those numbers include the delay and fees.
- Losses. How big are their bad trades and bad weeks, not only the good ones?
- Custody. Who can withdraw the money while you follow? Ideally, only you.
- Start with practice money. On CopyHype, $1,000 of practice money, free for 24 hours, plus 24 hours per invited friend whose first trade opens.
- Pick two or three traders, not one. One bad run then hurts less.
- Use a small amount per trade. From $5 a trade.
- Read each closed trade. Compare your copy with the original, after fees.
- Switch to real money only when the numbers make sense. Real money runs in a wallet only you can withdraw from.
Frequently asked questions
Is mirror trading the same as copy trading?
Today, often yes: many apps use the two words for the same thing. Historically, mirror trading meant copying an automated strategy rather than a person.
Is social trading safe?
It is as safe as the decisions you take from it. The feed itself does not move money. Automatic copying and money custody are where the real risks sit.
What is the best word to search for?
Copy trading is the most common term. On Hyperliquid, people also search "whale tracker" and "smart money", which lead to the same idea.
Do the traders know I copy them?
On public chains like Hyperliquid, no. You follow a public wallet. On exchange copy trading platforms, the lead trader opts in and usually gets a share of profits.
Can I copy a strategy bot on Hyperliquid?
Yes, in a way: some Hyperliquid vaults are run by automated strategies, and anyone can deposit. That pools your money with others. See copy trading vs Hyperliquid vaults.
